Submission Guidelines

DEVOLUTION Z ANTHOLOGY

Devolution Z is a horror literary anthology featuring supernatural and creature short stories, poetry, graphically enhanced flash fiction, articles and artwork.
Immediately following the April 15th 2017 release of issue #17 of Devolution Z Magazine, we will be switching to a super-sized anthology format.
Devolution Z will be accepting a larger number of stories, poems and flash fiction for publication in each anthology. We will no longer be limited to the 13 published pieces per issue.
As always, we are available in print and eBook formats through many great retailers, including—but not limited to—Amazon, Kindle, Apple, Nook, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords.

SHORT STORIES / POETRY

Short fiction or poetry on any of the following horror themes:
All supernatural, creature-based and extraordinary events horror. Zombies, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, trolls, demons, evil witchcraft, warlocks, secret societies, paranormal, aliens, myths, urban legends, mysticism, terrifying science, technology gone awry, cryptids or anything your mind can conjure up.
Post-apocalyptic and dystopian horror topics also welcome! Let your chilling imagination be your guide...

Short stories must be between 1,000 and 15,000 words in length.
Poetry must be between 100 and 5,000 words in length.
They must NOT be pasted into the body of the submission email!
Attach the .txt, .rtf or .doc/.docx file to the email.
Fiction and poetry must be original and previously unpublished.

Horror stories and poetry containing elements of science fiction, fantasy, romance and comedy are welcome!

We Accept:

• multiple submissions
• submissions worldwide
• collaboration submissions
• combination submissions (story or poem with associated artwork)

We Do Not Accept:

• fan fiction (fiction written by a fan rather than by its creator)
• previously-published work (this includes the internet)
• simultaneous submissions (works that have been submitted to multiple publications at the same time)
• erotica
• resubmissions of work previously not accepted for publishing by Devolution Z, unless it has been effectively rewritten or polished

ARTICLES

Articles could be based on your local / regional urban legends or true events involving elements of supernatural horror.

Topic Examples:
• haunted houses or apparitions
• strange creature encounters
• Bigfoot sightings or encounters
• alien encounters
• historical oddities
These are just a few simple examples. We leave the research and reporting style up to you, the writer.

Remember that all articles need to contain frightful elements. After all, we are a supernatural horror anthology.

Article should be between 1,000 and 2,500 words in length.
Photos may be included with your submission and could be used with the article. The article's author must be the owner of the photographs submitted.
Custom artwork may be included. Please read the Internal Artwork / Photography submission instructions below for details.

INTERNAL ART / PHOTOS

Artists: send us your best horror artwork.
Artwork must be previously unpublished!
We accept submissions of original digital artwork, traditional artwork in digital form and photographs. No sexually-oriented artwork or photographs, please.

If you are worried about protecting your artwork, we are more than happy to accept watermarked versions for review purposes. Once the artwork has been formally accepted, a high-resolution version without any watermarks will be required.

We only accept high-resolution images for internal publishing.
1,000 pixels minimum on the long side and 300 dpi.
Artwork must be in PNG or JPG format.
Photographs must be in PNG or JPG format.
We do not publish any images with watermarks.
Internal artwork may be signed and will include a copyright notice upon request.

All internal artwork is the property of the artist and Devolution Z does not claim any ownership of that artwork.

COVER ART

We accept reprints!
We accept submissions of digital artwork and traditional artwork in digital form. No sexually-oriented artwork, please.

You may also email us with a link to your online gallery if you have one.

RIGHTS

We buy the right to publish the selected story, poetry, artwork or photograph and to archive it on our website.

Short Stories, Poetry and Articles

Writers retain all rights to use their work for merchandising or to post their work elsewhere ninety (90) days after it is published.

Internal / Cover Art

Artists retain full ownership and copyright of any internal artwork published within Devolution Z.

PAY RATES

Short Story

1 cent per 2 words
For example:
2,000 word short story will pay $10.00
5,000 word short story will pay $25.00
15,000 word short story will pay $75.00 (maximum payment)

✱ Word count calculated using Microsoft Word. Based on final edited product as it will appear in both print and eBook editions, excluding story title, biography & author name.

Poetry

$10 per accepted poetry piece

$15 per accepted article

$50 per accepted cover art

If using email, please include your legal name, proper mailing address and, optionally, your pseudonym (alias) and biography (100 words or less)

YOUR NAME AND BIOGRAPHY

Choose the name you would like us to use when we publish your short story, artwork or photograph.
Pseudonyms (aliases) are acceptable.
If, in addition, you would like to have your biography published, please include it in your submission e-mail.
Kindly limit your biography to 100 words or less.
All biographies must be written in the 3rd person.
Please note that you are welcome to include any links to your own personal sites, twitter, facebook, etc. We do not allow links to any sites that are not your own.

FORMATTING

You submission can be submitted with any formatting you personally prefer.
Seriously! This is not the 1970's and we are not formatting for a printing press. If our editors cannot reformat your work to their needs in less than a minute, they should seriously look into another line of work! It should not be your concern as a writer to worry about silly and antiquated formatting constraints. The world has computers now!

We do ask that if you have scene breaks, please have them clearly marked. For example: * * *

RESPONSE

Devolution Z will contact all authors, poets and artists within 5 business days to acknowledge receipt of their work.
Acceptances and rejections are sent out within 90 days of submission date.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Author's personal information (name, e-mail, alias or address) will not be shared with anyone outside our editorial staff, except in the following situations:
• if we are compelled by law
• if the author has instructed us to do so

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

When you submit to Devolution Z, you are verifying that you are the artist, photographer or writer of the submitted work. The artist, photographer or writer thereby grants First North American Serial Rights to Devolution Z. Rights revert to the writer ninety (90) days after publication.

For clarification, the only right we hold during this period is the right to enforce the agreement that the work will not be published elsewhere for the ninety (90) day period after the date of publication.

We include short bios, if desired, of our contributors in the associated issues. We reserve the right to use your biography and an excerpt of your work for future features on our website, digital or social media. Your biography may also include links to your Twitter, blog, website, etc.

Devolution Z is pleased to accept original, previously unpublished artwork, photographs, short stories and poetry for publication.

We ask that Devolution Z be credited as the first place of publication for any accepted short stories, poetry, graphically enhanced flash fiction or previously unpublished artwork.
